How is Contemplate different from other weight loss apps?
Contemplate is evidence based. In weight loss science, the two most widely supported features of an app are regular weigh-ins and calorie counting. Other apps focusing heavily on 'accountability' have limited evidence, if any. Calorie counting or food diaries take a lot of effort. It can be worth it, but the reality is most people tire of it and fall back into old habits.
Contemplate is different in that a daily 'micro-dose' of reflection keeps the contemplator connected to their motivation without asking for much time or effort in return.
Is that it?
The goal of other apps is to get you in, and keep you frequently interacting with the app. Interaction is a key performance metric for them, but it also means they demand a lot of your time, which leads to most people dropping out. For Contemplate, the opposite is true!
We want you in and out as quick as possible. We only care that you keep popping in.
Why should I use Contemplate?
Because it's free to try up easy to get the hang of! What have you got to lose?
Other apps have an extremely high attrition rate (most people stop using them pretty quickly). Because Contemplate is so quick to use, it's easier to stick around for longer. When you're trying to create new habits and change your life, sticking at it is super important.
Why can't I find Contemplate on my app store?
We haven't launched on the app stores yet, but we're working on it (tentatively aiming for mid 2021). We will let anyone who has registered interest know when we do and it should be as easy as downloading the app, signing up or logging in, and picking up where you left off.
For now, Contemplate is only available as a web app that you need to return to each day. Just be sure to set up notifications (if you are on Android), or keep an eye out for the reminder emails. Alternatively, you can switch off the emails, but we recommend setting up a calendar event or recurring alarm on your phone so you don't forget. Once we're on the app stores we will be able to send you reminders directly through the app.
I would prefer not go to into my emails to find the link to the app every day. Is there another way?
Yes! You can bookmark the app itself, or add Contemplate to your home screen (click here for a semi-recent guide).
If you have an Android phone, after your first contemplation you should have been prompted to set up notifications, which will remind you to contemplate each day with a link back to the app.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to set up notifications on iOS (iPhone and iPad) until we launch on the App Store. In the meantime, we recommend setting either a recurring alarm or repeating calendar event in your calendar with alerts.
How do I contemplate?
Each day in the app you will see our logo at the bottom of the screen. The 3 dots in our logo will be blinking on and off. That means you have not contemplated on that day. To contemplate, click on the logo, and you will be taken to a screen asking you to enter your weight (you can skip this, but there is good evidence for the benefits of weighing in daily), you will be asked to enter what you intend to weigh this time next week, then you will be given a question to contemplate.
That's it. Each day you will get a different question. The questions are designed to tap into your values, the strategies that work for you, and the things in your life that you can control. If you reflect on these areas consistently, you should notice yourself staying in a good headspace to chip away at your weight loss goals.
